1. Come, thou Fount of every blessing;
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
mount of God’s unchanging love!
2. Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I’m come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
3. O to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart; O take and seal it;
seal it for thy courts above.
This is a hymn that speaks of grace, it reminds us of the great work of salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ. We see the joy of salvation exuding from the heart of the writer of the hymn, Oh, what sweetness, what blessedness. The Love of the Lord Jesus Christ is unwavering, overly sufficient to us as we come to his presence.
In the midst of our world with constant and almost unending need, there are always times when we can only rely on the ever-open arms of God’s love. Laying all of our cares and burdens at his feet, even in the face of those needs, as we look up to him, he will satisfy the need, according to His need in glory.
This fountain of blessing also helps our weakness, as seen in the third verse of that hymn, it says – Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. The grace of God that has delivered us from darkness into His marvellous light (1 Peter 2 vs 9b) is also able to keep us a pleasing vessel unto Him who has redeemed us.
We are prone to wander, because we are still in the world, the allures of the world is always around us, but as we have our desire, to please the Lord who has saved us, sanctified and whole to the glory of the Father, we keep praying to him, believing that he can save to the very end (Hebrews 7 vs 25), all those who trust in him.
Prayers
1. Lord Jesus, I thank you for your love and sacrifice on the cross of Calvary.
2. I pray Lord, that you will continually keep me always in your love, saying No, to the desires of the flesh in my life in Jesus name.
3. Continually guide me, take my heart, Lord, seal it for your courts above.
